Another very exciting project. This classic Aussie muscle car is in for a full bodywork and paint restoration. It will be concourse black and stunning!
This car looked fantastic before it was stripped down and the owner and I were very excited to get into a relatively simple project and a fairly straightforward paintjob. Sadly, when I picked it up from chemical dipping it was pretty much a worst case scenario. It has multiple very poorly done old rust repairs, lots of rust and some very dangerous old accident repairs. After consultation with the owner the decision was taken to go ahead and repair the car but we’re now looking at an extremely in depth body restoration before we look at any paintwork.
Due to the fact that the car was in bare metal and it will now be a long time doing metalwork the decision was made to seal up the inside and underneath in epoxy primer to stop surface rust taking hold. So it was mounted on a rotisserie and rolled into the booth. Hanging panels were also done.
Extremely in depth rust repairs have been undertaken. In addition to the usual repairs to bottoms of doors etc, I’ve been forced to remove the roof skin to repair it and the understructure as well as the complete plenum. The entire rear of the car will be replaced at a later stage as well.
More rust repairs… Plenum being replaced, all inside surfaces painted of course, with weld through primer on all seams. Rear hatch being checked to ensure we have good gaps still. Inner guard structure removed, repaired, painted and re fitted.
The entire rear of the car was too damaged from rust and previous repairs to be fixed. So it was removed and replaced…. As was the LH chassis rail.
Lots more work going on with the LX, some light file finishing on panels, new lower door sections made, some horrible old welding tidied up and then it was mounted on my new rotisserie.
