The kombi is in the shop and work is progressing well. I’ve done the usual assessment of the panel gaps before pulling it apart. In terms of rust it’s extremely good. Lots of dents to the lower part of the body to be taken care of.
I’m moving forward with the dent repair and hand stripping the exterior panels ready to media blast the inside, underneath and edges.
Although in very good condition for a Kombi the blasting still revealed a few issues to be dealt with. It needs new outer sills and some repairs underneath. There is also some deep surface rust and pitting on the roof. This takes a lot of time to remove but it must be completely removed or it will come back.
This is a lot of real estate to sand! A lot of work to get those big flat sides straight.
It’s been seam sealed, stoneguarded and painted underneath and inside.
I painted the roof while it was still mounted on the rotisserie before I started getting the lower colour down on the outside panels. Always an exciting stage to see colour!

lower colour painted on the bodyshell and looking great!
I then hung all the panels back on to accurately lay out the line for the white upper section before pulling it all apart again and doing a lot of very careful masking before painting the white.
The engine bay has been painted as well as lots of fiddly details like hinges and screw heads. It’s getting very close now!
